India bans Pakistani artists; Pakistan retaliates by halting Indian songs on FM radio
PTC Web Desk: In a sharp escalation of cultural tensions following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Government of India has imposed a comprehensive ban on Pakistani artists and their digital presence. The move includes not only prohibiting Pakistani actors and singers from working in India but also blocking their social media accounts and restricting access to 16 Pakistani YouTube channels within Indian territory.
In a retaliatory step, Pakistan on Thursday announced an immediate ban on broadcasting Indian songs on all FM radio stations across the country. The decision was confirmed by Shakeel Masood, secretary general of the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA). He stated, "PBA has implemented an immediate ban on the airing of Indian songs across all Pakistani FM radio stations."
Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar extended full support to the decision, calling it "an admirable, patriotic move that reflects the collective sentiment of the nation." In an official letter to the PBA, Tarar wrote, “This step strengthens national unity and demonstrates our collective resolve to safeguard our cultural values during these challenging times.”
Indian songs have long enjoyed widespread popularity in Pakistan, especially classics by legendary singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, and Mukesh, whose melodies frequently featured on Pakistani FM channels.
Meanwhile, India’s ban targets several high-profile Pakistani celebrities. Among those restricted are Mahira Khan, Hania Aamir, Ali Zafar, Maya Ali, Ayeza Khan, Sajal Aly, Iqra Aziz, and Sanam Saeed. Notably, Mahira Khan, Ali Zafar, and Sajal Aly have previously worked in Bollywood. Sajal Aly was particularly acclaimed for her role as Sridevi's daughter in the film Mom.
