PTC News Desk: An Indian-origin couple found themselves amidst a terrifying ordeal during a violent incident at a busy shopping center in Sydney, where a man went on a stabbing spree, resulting in the tragic deaths of six individuals before being fatally shot by police.

Shoi Ghoshal and her husband, Debashis Chakrabarty, were present at the Westfield shopping center in Bondi Junction when chaos ensued. Recounting their harrowing experience to the BBC, Ghoshal described how they sought refuge in a backroom, fortifying themselves with cardboard boxes along with approximately 20 to 25 others as the violent attack unfolded.

Initially mistaking the commotion for a fire, Ghoshal soon realised the severity of the situation as reports of rampant stabbings surfaced. Amidst the chaos, the group made frantic calls to the police, who instructed them to remain calm and await assistance.

Tragically, the couple and others were forced to witness the anguish of an elderly woman whose husband remained outside the barricaded area. Ultimately, they were evacuated through an emergency exit, emerging to the sight of a swarm of police cars.

The assailant's actions resulted in the deaths of four women and one man at the scene, with another woman succumbing to her injuries at a hospital. Eight individuals, including a nine-month-old baby, sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment.

The suspect, identified as a 40-year-old man, was swiftly confronted by a senior female officer who bravely engaged him, ultimately fatally shooting him in response to his aggression. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hailed the officer as a hero for her swift and decisive actions, which undoubtedly saved lives.

While authorities await formal identification of the suspect and refrain from speculating on his motivations, they believe he acted alone and have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.

The incident has left a community in shock and mourning, with heartfelt condolences extended to the families of the victims. As investigations continue, the resilience and bravery displayed by those impacted serve as a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of tragedy.
