LA on edge: Trump sends additional troops to LA as immigration protest intensifies
PTC News Desk: The U.S. military is dispatching around 700 Marines to Los Angeles on Monday in a temporary move designed to reinforce security during violent protests targeting President Trump’s immigration enforcement actions. Now in their fourth day, these protests are being supplemented by the Marines to aid the National Guard already stationed there.
This week, the National Guard presence is set to grow to over 4,000 personnel after the White House ordered an additional 2,000 troops. Despite this surge, the Pentagon has not activated the Insurrection Act—which would allow active-duty troops to carry out law-enforcement duties—a distinction officials are keen to preserve.
"A battalion will be sent, but for now, the Insurrection Act is not expected to be invoked," the official said anonymously. "The situation is fluid and could change."
"The first 2,000? Given no food or water," he tweeted, adding, "This isn’t about public safety. It’s about stroking a dangerous President’s ego. This is Reckless. Pointless. And Disrespectful to our troops."
It stands as one of the most substantial military mobilizations in response to domestic unrest in recent years. Around 300 California National Guard troops were initially dispatched on Sunday—coinciding with the third and most heated day of immigration-related demonstrations in Los Angeles. Mobilized under federal authority, their deployment sparked intense criticism from state officials. Notably, the National Guard operates under a dual command system, answerable to both federal and state governments.
