Afghanistan: Taliban begin political talks amid protests in country

Afghanistan-Taliban News: Taliban on Wednesday started political talks with officials of the previous regime amid protests in Nangarhar, Khost, and Kunar provinces in which two civilians were killed.

Anas Haqqani, a member of the Taliban Peace Council, met former Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai and Reconciliation Council chief Abdullah Abdullah. However, there have been no details on what was discussed during the meeting.

Ahead of the meetings, Taliban deputy leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and eight others have landed in Kandahar from Qatar on Tuesday.

In Kabul, the Taliban have not enforced the full naqab on women's media persons while news channels have been debating the pros and cons of the Taliban takeover.

The insurgents are seeking to present a ‘reasonable’ face after Canadian PM Justin Trudeau stated that his government would not recognise the group.

On the other side, the Taliban arrested woman governor Salima Mazari. Likewise, the Taliban have been spraying white paint on pictures of women at storefronts.

While the evacuation of US staffers and Afghan loyalists by western countries picked up the pace, the US stated it was keeping a close eye on the issue of human remains in its aircraft and videos of men falling from planes.

Meanwhile, Ashraf Ghani, who fled the country and is currently in Abu Dhabi, was offered asylum on “humanitarian grounds.”

Several countries, including the UK, the US, and Australia, have warned that “We will closely monitor how any future government ensures rights that have become an integral part of women and girls in Afghanistan."
