Delhi CM Rekha Gupta attacked by man at public event, rushed to hospital; accused wanted relative out of jail
Officials stated that the man, estimated to be in his mid-30s to early 40s, first gave some papers to Gupta, then began shouting before slapping her.
PTC News Desk: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly assaulted by a man during a Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at her residence on Wednesday, police said. As per initial reports, the accused, believed to be around 40 years old and carrying a bag, suddenly approached the Chief Minister amid a crowd and attacked her.
Officials stated that the man, estimated to be in his mid-30s to early 40s, first gave some papers to Gupta, then began shouting before slapping her. He was quickly restrained and taken into custody. Police identified him as 41-year-old Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya from Rajkot. He is currently in custody and will be questioned further to ascertain his motive.
Delhi BJP president Virendraa Sachdeva also recounted the incident, stating that the attacker attempted to grab the Chief Minister’s hand during the hearing, which led to a scuffle in which her head may have struck a corner. He said police are probing the man’s identity and motive, while doctors have confirmed that Gupta is stable though in shock. Sachdeva emphasized that Gupta is resolute about carrying on with her daily duties and Jan Sunwai sessions, describing her as a “strong woman with an unwavering commitment to Delhi.” He also dismissed reports that she was hit with a stone or slapped, calling such claims inaccurate.
"A man, believed to be around 35 years old, handed over a document before suddenly attacking the Chief Minister. While it is not yet clear if he is affiliated with any political party, his remarks prior to the assault suggested that he may be linked to a party discontent with its position in Delhi," said BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar.
Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa strongly condemned the incident, calling it a "conspiracy by rivals." He said, "She worries for Delhi day and night. They cannot tolerate that a CM remains amid the public for hours, that she meets people at her residence. So, there seems to be a political conspiracy behind this. Delhi Police is investigating, and all facts will come out."
