Delhi High Court orders complete takedown of Yo Yo Honey Singh and Badshahs song Volume 1

In a notable development highlighting the intersection of law, culture, and digital media, the Delhi High Court has ordered the removal of a song associated with Yo Yo Honey Singh and Badshah, nearly 20 years after its original release.

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav directed a complete ban on the song, making it clear that not just the full track but even small excerpts or fragments of its lyrics must be kept out of public circulation.

“In whatever forms this song is available on social media platforms, it has to be taken down is clearly the opinion. No one can deny this. We cannot allow even the slightest of it to be on social media,” the Court said. 

“Volume 1” is a contentious track by Yo Yo Honey Singh, released nearly two decades ago. While it achieved widespread popularity, it also drew criticism for its explicit lyrics and perceived misogynistic tone, leading to legal complaints and public protests across India. 

As per the reports, court took a firm position on the nature of the song, emphasizing that creative expression does not exist in isolation from societal values. It observed that content widely accessible to the public must adhere to certain standards of decency, especially in an era where digital reach amplifies impact across age groups and communities.

The court directed authorities and platforms to ensure that the song is removed in all forms whether as full audio tracks, short clips, or adapted versions. This underscores the growing accountability of digital intermediaries in regulating and moderating content hosted on their platforms.

The decision is likely to contribute to ongoing debates about artistic freedom versus social responsibility. While artists often push boundaries as part of creative expression, such cases reinforce the idea that public content carries influence and, therefore, accountability.
