PTC Web Desk: Indian cinema is making its mark on the international stage, as two notable films – Rishab Shetty’s 'Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1' and Anupam Kher’s 'Tanvi The Great' – have been included among 201 feature films eligible for Best Picture consideration at the 98th Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) released the official list of qualifying films, a key step before the nominations are revealed on January 22, 2026. To qualify, films must meet specific criteria, including a theatrical release in at least 10 of the top 50 US markets within 45 days of release, submission of the confidential RAISE (Representation and Inclusion Standards Entry) form and compliance with at least two of the four inclusion standards.

'Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1', produced by Hombale Films, explores the origins of Daiva worship in Tulunadu, rooted in the fourth-century Kadamba dynasty. Rishab Shetty, who also stars in the film, plays Berme, the protector of the Kantara forest and its tribal community. The film’s rich blend of folklore, culture and action has resonated with audiences worldwide.

'Tanvi The Great', directed by veteran actor Anupam Kher, tells the inspiring story of Tanvi Raina, a young girl with autism who dreams of joining the Indian Army, following in the footsteps of her late father. Shubhangi plays Tanvi, supported by a strong cast, including Anupam Kher, Jackie Shroff, Boman Irani, and Karan Tacker.

In total, 317 films are eligible for the 98th Academy Awards across all categories, including Best Documentary, Best Animated Feature and Best International Feature Film. While inclusion on the eligibility list is an important milestone, the final nominations will be determined through the Academy’s voting process.
