What is Candida Auris – Types, symptoms, treatment & prevention
PTC News Desk: A deadly fungal infection called Candida auris has garnered attention worldwide due to its ability to cause outbreaks in the United States with four individuals in Washington state testing positive in the current month.
After confirming the initial case on January 10, the public health agency for Seattle and King County reported the discovery of three additional cases of Candida auris infection last week.

What is Candida Auris?
Candida auris is a species of yeast that can cause severe fungal infections in humans. It was first identified in 2009 and has since become a global concern due to its resistance to many antifungal medications.

Candida auris primarily causes invasive fungal infections, commonly affecting the bloodstream, ears, and wounds. It poses a significant threat to individuals with weakened immune systems, those who have recently undergone surgery, or patients in intensive care units.

Bloodstream Infections: Fever, chills, hypotension, and other signs of sepsis.
Ear Infections: Ear discharge, pain, and hearing loss.
Wound Infections: Redness, swelling, and pain around the affected area.

Candida Auris-Treatment
Antifungal Medications: Depending on the susceptibility of the specific strain, treatment may involve antifungal drugs such as echinocandins, polyenes, or azoles. However, resistance to these drugs has been reported.
Isolation and Infection Control: Due to its ability to spread in healthcare settings, infected individuals are often placed in isolation, and strict infection control measures are implemented to prevent further transmission.
