PTC Web Desk:  Love it or question it, but one thing is certain. The American dollar is about to look very different. In a first, the signature of a sitting American president will now appear on US paper currency. The development was confirmed by the Treasury Department on Thursday. To mark  America's 250th birthday celebrations, it has been decided to have President Donald Trump's name printed on all new dollar bills.

The $100 bill will be the first to have the signature. Fresh notes carrying the signature of Donald Trump beside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's will roll off the printing press in June. The same practice will be followed for other denominations in the coming months.

Notably, for 165 years, the Treasurer of the United States had a signature spot on every dollar bill; right from 1861 when federal currency was first introduced. That tradition ends now. The Treasurer's signature is being dropped, making way for the president's name instead.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called it a proud moment. He said putting Trump's name on American currency is the most powerful way to honour both the country's journey and its 250th anniversary milestone, what officials are calling the Semiquincentennial.

US Treasurer Brandon Beach also threw his support behind the decision, describing it as "appropriate" and "well deserved."

For now, notes still being printed carry the signatures of former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and ex-Treasurer Lynn Malerba, both of whom served under President Joe Biden. Malerba's signature is historically significant as it marks the last in an unbroken chain stretching back over 160 years.

The currency change is part of a bigger wave of Trump tributes being planned around the July 4 anniversary. A federal arts commission recently gave the green light to a 24-karat gold commemorative coin carrying Trump's image, which will be released as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
