India successfully test-fires BrahMos supersonic cruise missile; All you need to know

India on Wednesday successfully test-fired the extended range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile which can hit targets at over 400 km range.

The test was carried out under the PJ-10 project of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under which the missile was launched with an indigenous booster.

This was the second testfiring of the extended range version of the BrahMos supersonic missile. The airframe and booster of the missile are indigenous, news agency ANI reported.

The BrahMos missile was developed as part of a joint venture between India and Russia.

It was originally developed with a range of 290 kilometers, however, the missile's range was later extended to over 400 kilometers.

As per the reports, the BrahMos supersonic missile can hit targets at a range of up to 450 kms.

The first test-fire of the extended range BrahMos missile was conducted in March 2017.

According to the official website, BrahMos is the first supersonic cruise missile which is known to be in service. It was first inducted into the Indian armed forces in 2005 when it was deployed on Indian Navy ship INS Rajput.

The ship-based and land-based versions of BrahMos are already in service. BrahMos' air launch version has been successfully test-fired.
