ABVP-SOI candidate Ankit Bidhan has won the president’s post in the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council election by more than 500 votes
PTC Web Desk: ABVP-SOI candidate Ankit Bidhan has won the president’s post in the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council election, defeating his rivals by a margin of more than 500 votes. SOI had extended support to ABVP for the polls.
Bidhan, who is originally from Jind, Haryana, is a research scholar at Panjab University. The formal announcement of the election results is expected shortly.
The victory is significant for ABVP as it is the first time in Panjab University’s history that the organisation has secured the council’s top post for two consecutive terms. However, this time SOI had also extended support to the ABVP.
Four-way contest for president
The election for president saw a four-cornered contest between Gurman Singh Sidhu of NSUI, Aadil Bir Singh of AAP-backed ASAP, Ankit Bidhan of ABVP and Darshpreet Singh of Sath.
Voting was held for several positions, including president, vice-president, secretary, joint secretary and department representatives.
A total of 16 candidates were in the fray, with four candidates contesting for the president’s post.
Results from Chandigarh colleges
Apart from Panjab University, results were also declared at other colleges in Chandigarh.
Abhiraj Singh secured the president’s post at GGDSD College, Sector 32, while Parminder Singh won the president’s post at Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46.
Polling began at 9.30 am amid tight security and a heavy police presence. Voting continued until 11.30 am, after which the counting process started at noon.
The final official results are expected to be announced soon.
