‘Laid off in a 5-minute Google Meet’: 80 Indian employees reportedly fired by US fintech firm

PTC Web Desk:  Around 80 employees of an Indian customer support team were reportedly laid off during a brief Google Meet call by US-based digital banking company Bluevine, according to a viral social media post by an alleged former employee.

The employee, who shared the experience in a post titled “Laid off over a Google Meet,” claimed that the team was asked to work from home that day due to “operational reasons”. However, several hours into their evening shift, employees were reportedly called into a virtual meeting and informed that the entire Indian customer service team was being terminated.

According to the post, the employee had started a 6:30 pm shift and was around three hours into work when the unexpected meeting was scheduled.

“At 9.30pm they just invited us on a Google Meet and told us the entire Indian Customer service team has been fired!”

The employee claimed that around 80 staff members were affected, describing the development as a blow to several families.

The post also criticised the lack of advance notice and said employees had continued working long hours amid concerns over job security.

Employee claims performance was cited

The employee said management told the team that the Indian unit was not delivering the expected output.

However, the former employee disputed that explanation, claiming that the Indian team had worked hard and put in extra effort because of concerns about job security.

The claims have since attracted significant attention online, with social media users describing the mass termination as “sad” and “disheartening”.

When asked about the company involved, the employee identified it as Bluevine, a US digital banking platform that offers financial products and services to small businesses.

The allegations are based on the employee’s social media account and have not, from the information provided, been independently verified. There is no official statement from Bluevine too.
