PTC News Desk: Canva has announced plans to cut 22 per cent of its workforce, affecting 1,271 employees. CEO Melanie Perkins said the decision followed the company’s “hardest year” in its history.

“I’m deeply sorry for the pain and disruption this will cause for everyone affected,” Perkins wrote in an internal memo.

Canva employs more than 5,700 people across 37 countries, including India. The company has not said which teams or regions will be affected.

While layoffs have continued across the tech industry, Canva is offering an extensive support package to departing employees. All 1,271 affected staff members will be allowed to keep their company MacBooks, so they have a laptop after leaving the company. They will also receive a one-year LinkedIn Premium subscription, one-to-one career coaching and interview preparation.

Canva said members of its Talent Acquisition team would help employees review their resumes and practise for interviews as they look for new jobs.

Pay, healthcare and support package

According to Perkins, every affected employee will receive at least six months’ salary, including any statutory entitlements, regardless of where they are based.

The company will also remove the one-year vesting requirement for employees who joined within the past year, allowing them to retain eligible company equity despite being laid off before completing 12 months.

Canva will continue healthcare coverage for 12 months in countries where it offers the benefit. Departing employees and their families will also have access to Canva Care, the company’s employee assistance programme, for one year.

The company is creating an opt-in directory of former employees and plans to share it with investors, partners and its wider industry network to help them find new jobs.

Canva is also launching the Canva Collective Fund, which will offer $10,000 grants to affected employees who want to start a business or work on a project in their local community. The company said it would not seek ownership or equity in projects supported by the grants. Employees have until December 14 to register their interest.

How other companies have handled layoffs ?

Other companies have also offered severance packages, but Canva’s support includes free laptops and grants for new projects.

When Microsoft cut 4,800 jobs in July, it offered US-based employees at least 60 days of base pay, with additional pay based on length of service, up to a maximum of 39 weeks.

Oracle reportedly offered laid-off employees in India one month of base pay for each year of service, a further two months’ salary and health insurance coverage.
