CJP calls for Tricolour march at Delhis Connaught Place on Oct 16; Delhi Police vows action
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced the gathering days after police took action against the group’s planned October 10 protest in Delhi.
Delhi Police has warned of action against the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, ahead of the group’s planned tricolour protest at Connaught Place on October 16.
Police have denied permission for the gathering, which is intended to protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
According to LiveLaw, Delhi Police told the Delhi High Court on Thursday that it would take “appropriate steps” against Dipke, who has called for a protest titled ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ on Friday. The court was hearing a petition filed by Anil Kumar Gupta, a licensed street vendor who sells readymade garments at Palika Bazar. He argued that the proposed protest could affect businesses in the area.
Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma appearing for Delhi Police told the court that the CJP has called for an “illegal march".
“Respondent no 6 (CJP) has called an illegal march. This is festival weekend. We will be completely on street. CJP’s (Abhijeet) Dipke be directly restrained. He comes from outside Delhi. If this weekend also goes, it will be over for us. This is major Hindu festival", he said.
Abhijit Dipke calls for Tricolour march
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke announced the gathering days after police took action against the group’s planned October 10 protest in Delhi.
In a video message on Wednesday, Dipke appealed to “all patriots who love the tricolour” to gather at Connaught Place at 5 pm on October 16. He said the protest would be held against what he described as the “illegal arrest” of party members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after entering Jantar Mantar, which is no longer an authorised protest site, and waving the national flag.
In his video message, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke claimed that the party’s co-conveners were jailed simply for waving the tricolour at Jantar Mantar. He said the planned protest aimed to send a message that waving the national flag is not a crime.
