Delhi weather update: Heavy rainfall continued to affect Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to extend its red alert for several parts of the national capital until the afternoon.

The downpour led to waterlogging in many areas and raised concerns over traffic congestion, while Gurugram Police urged companies to allow employees to work from home wherever possible to reduce pressure on city roads.

According to the IMD, North East Delhi, Central Delhi, South East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi and Shahdara remain under a red alert, with forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The weather department extended the warning until 2:25 pm, advising residents to remain cautious during the period of intense rainfall.

Orange alert for Noida and Ghaziabad

Neighbouring cities Noida and Ghaziabad have been placed under an orange alert, with the IMD predicting moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, Gurugram and Faridabad are under a yellow alert, where light to moderate rain is expected during the day.

Gurugram Police urge companies to allow WFH

With continuous rain expected to cause severe traffic congestion and waterlogging, the Gurugram Police appealed to corporate offices and private establishments to permit employees to work from home wherever feasible. The advisory is aimed at easing congestion as heavy rain continues to impact the city.

Landslides disrupt Gangotri and Yamunotri routes in Uttarakhand

Heavy monsoon showers also affected Uttarakhand, where landslides and continuous rockfall blocked key pilgrimage routes.

The Gangotri National Highway was closed near Dharasu Nalu Pani after road blockages, while the Yamunotri National Highway was shut near Silai Bend in the Durbil area due to falling rocks and debris.

Authorities in Dehradun also released excess water from the Asan Barrage after the Asan River's water level rose significantly.

Kerala districts put under orange alert

The IMD issued a three-hour orange alert for five districts in central Kerala—Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam.

These districts are expected to receive moderate rainfall along with strong surface winds of up to 40 kmph, according to the weather department.

48-hour power cut sparks protest in Gurugram

Separately, residents of Gurugram's Pyramid Urban Homes in Sector 67 staged protests after electricity remained unavailable for more than 48 hours in several residential societies and commercial establishments along Sohna Road. The prolonged outage also affected AIRIA Mall, Elan Mall and Ocus, causing water shortages and major inconvenience to residents.

Angry locals blocked Sohna Road before police and power department officials intervened and restored normal traffic movement.

As the monsoon remains active across northern and southern India, authorities have advised residents to stay updated with official weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.
