Gurugram rain fury: 36 mm rain in one hour brings traffic to a crawl, waterlogging worsens

Gurugram rain: A spell of heavy rain brought some relief from the humid weather in Gurugram on Saturday, but the downpour quickly turned into a traffic nightmare as several parts of the city were hit by waterlogging.

Around 36 mm of rain was recorded in just one hour, leading to slow-moving traffic on several major roads and connecting routes.

Delhi-Jaipur highway sees major congestion

Vehicular movement remained particularly slow between Sarhaul Border and Rajiv Chowk after the rain. The situation also affected stretches near Subhash Chowk, with vehicles moving at a crawl.

Water accumulated along the roadside, making movement difficult for two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The sudden increase in traffic after the rain added to the congestion.

Several commuters expressed concern that delays could worsen later in the day as people return home over the weekend.

Rajiv Chowk, Sohna Road among worst-hit areas

Waterlogging was reported in several important parts of Gurugram, including Rajiv Chowk, Sohna Road, Golf Course Extension Road, Udyog Vihar and areas around Sector 14.

Commuters said flooded roads had made conditions difficult for motorists and pedestrians alike.

The situation was particularly concerning on Udyog Vihar Phase 3 and Old Delhi-Gurugram Road, where rainwater collected in existing potholes. Drivers were forced to slow down to avoid accidents.

Traffic Police deploy personnel

Gurugram traffic police deployed personnel at major junctions and waterlogged locations to manage the situation and ease congestion.

The traffic department also issued an advisory for vehicles travelling towards Delhi. Motorists heading from Gurugram to Delhi were advised to take a U-turn at IFFCO Chowk and use the Aya Nagar border.

Those travelling towards the airport were advised to take the Dwarka Expressway instead.

Civic teams work to drain water

Teams from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram and the district administration were deployed to affected locations to remove accumulated rainwater using suction pumps. Officials continued monitoring vulnerable areas as intermittent rainfall remained possible.

More rain likely, administration issues warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more intermittent rain in Gurugram and neighbouring areas over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Officials said the active monsoon trough and a low-pressure area could lead to further rainfall. Continued heavy showers may worsen waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas.

The district administration has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

People have been urged to stay away from waterlogged roads, underpasses, trees, electricity poles and overhead power lines. Residents have also been cautioned against attempting to cross flooded roads.

Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh, who also heads the District Disaster Management Authority, has directed departments and emergency response agencies to remain on alert and take necessary precautionary measures.
