Heavy rain lashes Chandigarh, tricity, traffic snarls; IMD issues orange alert
The latest weather warning indicated a medium to intense spell of rain with thunderstorms and lightning across the Chandigarh Tricity region over the next two to three hours.
PTC News Desk: Medium to heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, lashed several parts of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula on Sunday afternoon. The spell brought relief from hot and humid weather but also highlighted the Tricity’s poor storm-water drainage system.
Rain began in several areas around 1 pm and continued till the time of filing this report. The intensity varied across different parts of the Tricity, while thunder and lightning were also reported at several places.

Temperatures remained above normal
The rain came a day after Chandigarh recorded the highest maximum temperature in the Punjab-Haryana region at 36.8°C, which was 3.7°C above normal. Mohali recorded 35.9°C, while Panchkula’s maximum temperature stood at 34.7°C on Saturday.
According to the IMD, thunderstorms and rain are expected across the Tricity from Sunday to Thursday, with heavy rain likely at isolated places during this period.
The forecast had predicted maximum temperatures of 34°C on Sunday, 32°C on Monday, 33°C on Tuesday, 32°C on Wednesday and 31°C on Thursday.
The seven-day forecast initially placed Chandigarh and Haryana in the scattered rainfall category, with rainfall expected to become fairly widespread on September 17 and 18.
