More bunkers to come up in Jammu and Kashmir, say officials
PTC Web Desk: Days after India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire, uncertainty continues to cloud the future of bilateral relations between the two nuclear-armed South Asian nations. The ceasefire, declared on May 10, came after four days of intense military exchanges sparked by India’s airstrikes on May 7. These were launched in response to a deadly militant attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistan. Islamabad, however, denied any involvement.
Although the ceasefire is holding for now, tensions remain high, with no sign of a diplomatic thaw. Life is gradually returning to normal along the Line of Control (LoC), but both countries have maintained a slew of punitive measures against each other.
India, days before its military response, had announced a range of diplomatic actions, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), halting visa issuance, and ending trade with Pakistan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised that “terror and talks cannot go hand in hand,” adding, “water and blood cannot flow together.” The IWT, a 1960 World Bank-brokered agreement, has historically survived conflicts but now stands frozen, posing serious risks to Pakistan’s agriculture and water supply.
In retaliation, Pakistan banned Indian flights from its airspace, suspended visas for Indians, closed the Attari-Wagah land border, and ended bilateral trade. Pakistan also threatened to suspend the Simla Agreement, which formalised the LoC, though it has not acted on this threat yet.
Diplomatic relations have been downgraded as both sides expelled each other’s defense attachés and reduced embassy staff. Civilian cross-border exchanges, including the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for Sikh pilgrims, have been suspended indefinitely.
Experts believe India’s trade losses are minimal, but Pakistan’s economy—already under stress—could suffer significantly due to restricted imports of essentials like medicines and raw materials.
Though open conflict has ceased, the situation remains volatile. Both nations are yet to show signs of reversing any of the aggressive diplomatic and economic measures, leaving future relations uncertain.
