Engineering student found dead in Chhattisgarh varsity hostel; academic stress suspected
PTC Web Desk: A 20-year-old engineering student of a private university in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district was found dead in her hostel room late Saturday night, in what the police believe to be a case of suicide. The student, identified as Princy Kumari, hailed from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand and was pursuing a B Tech degree in Computer Science. She was in her second year and staying at the university hostel near Punjipathra.
According to the police, Princy was found hanging inside her room. The incident came to notice after the hostel authorities were informed and reached the spot. The police conducted inquest proceedings and sent the body for post-mortem examination, following which it was handed over to the family.
Preliminary findings indicate that the student may have been under significant academic pressure. She was reportedly preparing for her second-year examinations while also appearing for backlog papers from her first year. A suicide note recovered from the room is being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
Officials said the exact cause of the death would be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received. Statements of fellow hostel residents and university staff are also being recorded to understand the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Sources said Princy’s family became worried when repeated phone calls made to her around 8.30 pm on Saturday went unanswered. Concerned for her safety, they contacted the hostel warden. When the warden reached the room, it was locked from inside. After receiving no response despite knocking, the warden looked through a window and found the student hanging.
The police said the suicide note indicates that Princy was distressed over her academic performance and felt unable to live up to her parents’ expectations. She reportedly apologised to her parents and expressed guilt over the financial burden of her education on the family.
Family members shared that she had backlogs in five subjects from her first semester and was preparing for re-examinations. They also mentioned that she had recently asked for about Rs 1 lakh in instalments to cover semester fees. The police said further investigation is underway.
