PM Modi inaugurates India's first nature-themed terminal of Guwahati airport, largest in Northeast
PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new terminal building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport in Assam’s Guwahati. The newly inaugurated terminal has been designed to handle around 13.1 million passengers per year and was built at an expense of ₹4,000 crore.
During the inauguration, PM Modi also took a tour of the new terminal building.
Officials said the project has an overall cost of ₹5,000 crore, with ₹1,000 crore allocated specifically for setting up Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. With the addition of the new terminal, Guwahati airport is expected to emerge as a key aviation hub, serving not only Assam but the entire Northeast region.
They added that the design of the terminal draws inspiration from Assam’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. The new terminal building covers an area of 1.40 lakh square metres.
Guwahati’s Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport is named after Assam’s first chief minister. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also unveiled an 80-foot statue of Gopinath Bardoloi outside the airport.
Earlier on Friday, PM Modi had shared a glimpse of the terminal and called it a “major boost to Assam’s infrastructure”.
“Increased capacity means better ‘Ease of Living’ and a boost for commerce as well as tourism,” he wrote on X
