Infosys begins tracking work from home power use to measure environmental impact

Infosys says electricity used by employees while working remotely should also be counted in company’s greenhouse gas emissions

PTC Web Desk: Months after facing criticism over layoffs and remarks on extended work hours, IT major Infosys has introduced a new internal exercise aimed at tracking electricity consumption by employees working from home. The initiative is part of the company’s effort to refine how it calculates its overall environmental footprint as hybrid work becomes a long-term model.

According to a report by The Economic Times, Infosys has started collecting data from employees who split their time between home and office under its hybrid work policy. Staff are currently required to be present on campus for at least 10 days every month, while the remaining working days may be spent remotely with approval.

With a large section of its workforce no longer operating solely from office campuses, Infosys believes that electricity used during remote work hours also forms part of the company’s greenhouse gas emissions.

The company reportedly informed employees through an internal communication explaining the rationale behind the move. Infosys Chief Financial Officer Jayesh Sanghrajka said as work increasingly shifts beyond office spaces, the environmental impact of daily operations now extends into employees’ homes.

He noted that accurate information on energy use during work-from-home hours is necessary to improve the company’s emissions reporting framework and maintain transparency with regulators and stakeholders.

What employees are being asked to share

As part of the survey, employees are asked to provide details related to household electricity consumption during working hours, including the office equipment used at home such as laptops, monitors, routers and other devices. The questionnaire also invites suggestions on steps that could help reduce energy usage.

Infosys has described the exercise as simple and voluntary, emphasising that the data will be used strictly for emissions accounting and sustainability reporting.

Meanwhile, Infosys continues to enforce its hybrid attendance norms through automated tracking systems. Employees seeking to work from home beyond the permitted days are required to obtain prior approval from their managers.
