Delhi-NCR weather update: A sudden storm hit Delhi-NCR on Wednesday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, hail and strong winds. This came just days after the region saw intense heat, with temperatures touching around 44°C in many areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued alerts as the weather worsened. Noida and Ghaziabad were placed under an orange alert, warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms, while Delhi was under a yellow alert, indicating possible disruption due to bad weather.
People in several areas, especially near the Delhi-Noida border, reported hail and strong winds. Weather officials said the storm developed quickly and was expected to weaken by around 7 pm.
According to experts, the storm was caused by a clash between hot, dry winds from the west and moisture-filled winds from the Bay of Bengal. This led to the formation of strong thunderclouds, resulting in rain, lightning and hail.
Officials also said the rainfall would not be uniform. Some areas may receive heavy rain, while others may see little or none.
The storm brought much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave. Delhi had been facing high temperatures for several days, increasing discomfort and health risks. Recent spells of rain have helped bring temperatures down and slightly improve air quality.
Authorities have advised people to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open areas and be careful of waterlogging on roads.
Weather experts say such conditions may continue for a few more days, with chances of more rain and thunderstorms before the heat returns.
