Bengaluru rains wreak havoc: Child among seven dead as hospital wall collapses
PTC News Desk: At least eight people including a child were killed and several others injured after a compound wall collapsed near the Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
The hospital wall collapsed on the roadside vendors and pedestrians who had taken shelter from the heavy rains. Soon after the incident rescue teams rushed to the spot and launched relief operations.
Several teams are clearing the debris while assessing the cause of the collapse.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the accident site to take stock of the situation. He announce an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased.
Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of the deceased, and ₹50,000 for those injured. He described the incident as “unfortunate” and extended condolences to the affected families.
In another rain-related incident, a man aged around 30–35 years died after allegedly coming into contact with an electric pole near Mini Forest in JP Nagar. Officials from the Karnataka Electricity Board reached the spot, and local police carried out an inspection.
Authorities said the victims included street vendors and people who had taken shelter from the rain. Two of those who died were from Kerala and had come to Bengaluru for work. A relative of one injured person said the victim is still in critical condition.
The sudden heavy rainfall brought relief from the heat but caused major disruption across the city. Areas such as Richmond Town and Shanthinagar experienced severe waterlogging, with water levels rising up to the waist. Traffic slowed significantly on major roads, and water also entered government buildings, including parts of the Vidhana Soudha.
