Rajasthan car fire: A family returning from a religious trip to Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir met a devastating end when their vehicle burst into flames on a busy Delhi-Mumbai Expresswaya in Alwar, Rajasthan.

Five persons lost their lives and one sustained critical burn injuries after a CNG car caught fire on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway near Maujpur in Rajasthan's Alwar district on Wednesday evening. The victims were on their way back from Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir when the tragedy struck.

Among those who died were three women, a minor girl, and one man , all residents of Sheopur district in Madhya Pradesh.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Priyanka Raghuvanshi, fire brigade units reached the site quickly and brought the fire under control within 15 minutes. However, the damage was already done . The car had burned down completely by then.

DSP Kailash Jindal said a short circuit was believed to have started the fire. The vehicle ran on CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), which caused the flames to spread at an unusually rapid pace, leaving the occupants almost no chance to escape.

The condition of the bodies was so severe that only skeletal remains were found inside the gutted vehicle. Officials said the remains have been preserved separately, and DNA testing will be carried out to confirm the identities of each victim.

The driver of the car, Vinod Kumar Mehar, survived after jumping out of the burning vehicle. He suffered burn injuries covering nearly 80 per cent of his body. He was first taken to a local health centre before being referred to Jaipur for specialised treatment.

The police have registered a case and a detailed investigation is currently underway.
