Satya Niketan building collapse: PG operator Sudhanshu arrested; police probe lease agreement
The arrest comes as police continue investigating the collapse of the five-storey building in South Campus’s Satya Niketan, which killed seven people and injured several others.
PTC News Desk: The Delhi Police have arrested Sudhanshu, one of the operators of the ‘Hostel Daze’ PG facility that was running from the building that collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area on September 6.
The arrest comes as police continue investigating the collapse of the five-storey building in South Campus’s Satya Niketan, which killed seven people and injured several others.
Mahesh Gupta, whose two-day police custody ends today, was taken from the South Campus police station to court. A building contractor and a mason were also produced before the court along with him.
According to Delhi Police sources, Mahesh, the son of property owner Hariram, told investigators that he was responsible for looking after the building's maintenance on behalf of his parents.
He reportedly said the property was leased to business partners Shubham Tyagi and Sudhanshu in August 2025. They were allegedly running the ‘Hostel Daze’ PG facility from the building.
Repair work was underway
During questioning, Mahesh reportedly told police that repair work had been going on in the basement for the past eight to 10 days because waste and rainwater had accumulated during the monsoon.
Repair and expansion work was also reportedly being carried out on the ground floor to increase commercial activity.
Mahesh allegedly told police that on the day of the collapse, he and his family members learnt about the incident from local residents. They then left their home and went to his in-laws’ house in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan.
A court has sent Hariram and his wife Urmila to 14 days of judicial custody, while their son Mahesh was earlier remanded to two days of police custody.
Police also said that labour contractor Sanoj was arrested in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, and was being brought to Delhi for questioning as part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has indicated that it may examine the issue of the recent PG building collapse in Satya Niketan on a pan-India basis.
A bench of Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R Mahadevan has listed the matter for hearing on Thursday.
The development followed a mention of the September 6 tragedy by senior advocate Ajit Sinha, who is serving as a court-appointed amicus curiae in an earlier case. In that matter, the Supreme Court has been examining compliance with its directions concerning illegal buildings and structures across the country.
