Manipuri singer Chongtham Vikram Singh beaten to death in Delhi; CCTV shows 7 men run down the stairways

PTC News Desk: The death of Manipuri singer and musician Chongtham Vikram Singh in Delhi has shocked many people. The 55-year-old guitarist and music teacher allegedly died after being attacked by a group of men following an argument over noise outside his home.

Singh, who had lived in Delhi for nearly two decades, was allegedly assaulted late on Sunday night, September 6, in Kilokari village in southeast Delhi.

The incident reportedly took place around 11:30 pm. Singh is said to have gone downstairs after noticing a group of men allegedly creating a disturbance outside his residence.

According to the preliminary police inquiry, Singh, who belonged to the Meitei community, objected to the alleged nuisance. Police said an argument followed, which later turned violent.

Reports said Singh was chased back towards his third-floor flat, where the group allegedly caught up with him and assaulted him in the corridor.

His son, Yaiphaba, then rushed him to Holy Family Hospital. However, Singh died while undergoing treatment.

His death has sparked anger among people from Manipur and the wider Northeast. It has also drawn attention to Singh’s life and musical career.

Who was Chongtham Vikram Singh ?

Vikram Singh was a well-known figure in Manipur’s Western music scene and was considered one of the early contributors to the state’s rock music movement. He played lead guitar for several popular bands, including Ultra Vires, Phoenix and Eastern Dark.

Singh later moved to Delhi, where he spent around 17 years working as a private music teacher and training young musicians.

He came from a family with a strong musical and cultural background. Singh was the eldest son of well-known Manipuri singer Chongtham Kamala, who lent her voice to Matamgi Manipur (1972), widely regarded as the first Manipuri feature film.
