A New Zealand court on Thursday sentenced the man who killed 51 Muslim worshippers in New Zealand's deadliest shooting to life imprisonment without parole. It is for the first time that such a sentence has been announced in the country.

The man identified as Brenton Tarrant, a 29-year-old Australian, admitted to 51 charges of murder, 40 counts of attempted murder and one charge of committing a terrorist act during the 2019 shooting rampage at two Christchurch mosques. Brenton had live-streamed the video on Facebook.

The High Court Judge Cameron Mander stated that a finite term was insufficient for such a crime and that Brenton Tarrant had shown no regret. Mander said that his crimes are so wicked that even if he was detained until he dies it will not exhaust the requirements of punishment and denunciation.

Brenton said through a lawyer in the court that he did not oppose the sentence. Even, he did not react to the sentence. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern welcomed the life sentence for Brenton saying that he deserved a lifetime of "complete and utter silence".

She also said that the trauma of March 15 is not easily healed. Ardern has been widely praised for her response to the attacks last year that killed 51 Muslim worshippers.
