BJP announces poll schedule for national president; Nitin Nabin likely to take over on January 20
Party sources indicated that Nabin will be the sole candidate in the fray
PTC Web Desk: The BJP has formally announced the schedule for the election of its national president, ending months of speculation over the party’s top organisational post. The election notification was issued by the BJP’s organisational election in-charge earlier in the day.
According to the announced programme, nominations for the post will be filed on January 19, while the election process will be completed on January 20. As reported in The Tribune, these dates had been indicated earlier, and the party’s official announcement has now confirmed the timeline.
BJP working president Nitin Nabin is expected to file his nomination on January 19, with senior party leaders acting as his proposers. Party sources indicated that Nabin will be the sole candidate in the fray, reflecting a unanimous decision reached after consultations at the highest levels of the BJP leadership.
The consensus on Nabin’s name is understood to have been finalised jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, bringing an end to months of internal deliberations and differing views within the organisation.
The formal election for the BJP’s top post will take place on January 20, paving the way for a leadership transition. Nabin is set to succeed JP Nadda, who assumed charge as BJP national president in January 2020 and has continued on an extended term since then.
At 45, Nitin Nabin will become the youngest-ever national president of the BJP. He will also be the first party chief to be born after the BJP’s formation in 1980, marking a generational shift in the organisation’s leadership.
