PTC News Desk: Panic gripped Chandigarh after two unknown bike-borne assailants opened fire at Diljot Hotel in Kajheri on Thursday morning. At least five round of shots were fired before they fled the spot.

Soon after the incident, a team of police officials reached the spot and launched the investigation.

Police have seized the hotel’s CCTV footage and efforts to identify the attackers are underway. Footage from nearby areas is also being examined. The preliminary investigation suggests a possible gang rivalry or an old enmity behind the firing.

The investigation has revealed that the attackers had earlier shot at Vicky, a gym owner in Mohali, before heading to Chandigarh. Their intended target here was Veeru, a resident of Sector 49 and operator of Hotel Diljot. Believing he was inside, they opened fire, but at that time Veeru was at his home.

Prior reconnaissance suspected

CCTV footage shows the miscreants arriving from the Mohali side. They first drove past the hotel, then returned a few seconds later and stopped, after which they opened fire. The gunshots shattered the hotel’s glass entrance door. Police suspect that the assailants had done prior recce, as they escaped through the same route they entered.

Hotel taken on lease

According to hotel staff, Veeru has been running the hotel on lease for the past six years. His friend Vicky runs a gym in Mohali. Police suspect the firing could be linked to personal rivalry. To aid the probe, they are also collecting dump data from the surrounding area to determine how many phones were active at the time of the incident.
