Fazilka–Malout highway accident: Student killed, two rescued after car falls into canal
PTC Web Desk: A tragic accident on the Fazilka–Malout highway claimed the life of a student and left two others injured after their car veered off the road and fell into a canal on Tuesday.
The victims had been returning to Fazilka after appearing for an examination in Malout. The deceased has been identified as Arshdeep, while the injured students, Honey, a resident of Ludhiana and Arunpreet Singh from Salem Shah Road in Fazilka, were rescued in time.
According to preliminary information, the car lost control and plunged into the canal. All three occupants were trapped as the vehicle began to submerge.
Local residents rushed to the spot immediately after the incident and launched a rescue operation along with divers. Honey and Arunpreet were pulled out safely, but rescuing Arshdeep proved difficult as the car had drifted nearly 70 metre downstream.
A diver involved in the operation said the team entered the canal and attempted to retrieve the occupants using ropes after spotting an open window in the submerged vehicle. Arshdeep was eventually brought out after considerable effort, but he was unconscious by then.
Senior Superintendent of Police Gurmeet Singh also reached the scene after being informed. He stated that the students were returning from an exam and that the exact cause of the accident is under investigation. Rescue efforts were carried out jointly by local authorities and the road safety force. The car was later retrieved from the canal using a JCB machine after nearly one and a half hours of operation.
The injured students were shifted to the Civil Hospital in Fazilka, where doctors declared Arshdeep dead on arrival. Honey and Arunpreet are reported to be out of danger.
