NDA Sarkar in Punjab: Amit Shahs remarks fuel speculation of potential BJP-SAD alliance ahead of 2027 Assembly elections
With the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections approaching, any indication of renewed cooperation could become an important political development.
PTC News Desk: In a much anticipated move, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has signalled BJP's alliance with its former ally Shiromani Akali Dal by saying that Punjab this time is set to have NDA government.
Speaking at the launch of development projects in Delhi, Shah said: “Punjab mein is baar NDA ki sarkar honey jaa rahi hai (Punjab this time is set to install an NDA government)."
The possibility of a BJP–Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) alliance in Punjab is politically significant because the two parties were long-term allies before parting ways in 2020. With the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections approaching, any indication of renewed cooperation could become an important political development.
BJP leaders Sunil Jakhar and Captain Amarinder Singh are among the staunch supporters of an alliance between the BJP and Akalis for upcoming Assembly elections in 2027. Backdoor talks have been underway since a long time as PTC News has been reporting about the same.
Discussion regarding a potential reunion between the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections involves mixed signals and ongoing seat-sharing negotiations. However with Shah's latest remarks, speculations about a possible tie-up in Punjab have intensified.
Speaking at a gathering in Dwarka, Shah also took a dig at the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party saying that Congress is ought to face electoral drought for next 30 years because of its negative politics and warned AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal that voters would “root out” his party’s government in Punjab.

Union Home Minister visits Punjab twice this year
First visit (September 30)
Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed a rally at Paragpur in Jalandhar on September 30 to mark the conclusion of the BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’. The campaign began on September 18 and covered all 117 Assembly constituencies, travelling around 4,000 kilometres.
Shah announced that if the BJP formed the government after the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, it would make the state free from the drug trade, including the trafficking of heroin, before December 31, 2029. He also accused the AAP government of failing to control drug trafficking in the state.
Second visit (October 20)
During his Punjab visit on October 20, Shah met families of people who had lost their lives after speaking out against the drug menace. He met affected families in Gurdaspur, Sangrur and Mansa and assured them that action would be taken against drug traffickers.
He also promised that attempts to silence people who speak out against drugs would not succeed and that those involved in drug trafficking would be brought to justice. Shah later attended a Dussehra celebration in Ludhiana.
