Punjab elections 2027: BJP’s solo gamble sets up four-way battle with AAP, Congress and SAD
Punjab Assembly elections 2027: With only a couple of months left for Punjab Assembly elections 2027, political activity in the state is beginning to gather pace. The contest is expected to be multi-cornered, with the BJP preparing to fight the election independently and the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) facing their own organisational challenges.
For the BJP, the coming election is particularly important. The party currently has only two MLAs in the 117-member Punjab Assembly and has traditionally relied on its alliance with the SAD to establish a political presence in the state. Its decision to contest the next election on its own therefore marks a significant shift in strategy.
BJP national general secretary BL Santosh has publicly stated that the party will go solo in the Assembly polls. The announcement puts the focus squarely on the BJP's ability to build a wider support base among Punjab's voters.
Over the past few years, the BJP has been attempting to strengthen its organisation across Punjab and reach sections of voters beyond its traditional support base.
The party has also been seeking to rebuild relations with sections of the Sikh and Jat Sikh communities after tensions surrounding the farmers' agitation and the now-repealed farm laws affected its political standing in the state.
The appointment of Kewal Singh Dhillon as Punjab BJP president has been seen as part of this broader effort. Dhillon's long association with the Congress gives the BJP a leader with experience in Punjab politics and could help the party connect with voters outside its established support base.
AAP faces incumbency challenge
The ruling AAP enters the election with the advantage of being in government but also faces the usual challenge of incumbency.
Issues likely to influence the campaign include Punjab's financial position, employment, drugs, law and order, industry and rural concerns. The opposition has repeatedly attacked the Bhagwant Mann government over these issues, while the government is expected to highlight its own welfare and development initiatives.
The BJP has also criticised the influence of the AAP's national leadership over the Punjab government, a charge that the ruling party has rejected.
How voters assess the performance of the Mann government will be one of the biggest factors in determining the shape of the next Assembly election.
Congress struggles with internal differences
The Congress remains a major player in Punjab but has been dealing with factional differences within the state unit. The party has 18 MLAs in the current Assembly and therefore starts with a considerably larger legislative base than the BJP. However, differences among senior leaders have remained a concern.
Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Punjab Congress chief Raja Warring represent competing political voices within the state unit. Efforts by the central leadership to bring different factions together will be crucial if the Congress wants to convert its existing support into electoral gains.
A divided opposition could potentially benefit the BJP, particularly in closely contested constituencies.
On the other hand, the Shiromani Akali Dal is also fighting to rebuild its base. The party is trying to rebuild its organisation and reconnect with its traditional voter base.
The key battle ahead
Punjab's next Assembly election is unlikely to be a simple contest between two parties. The BJP's decision to go alone, AAP's incumbency, Congress's internal differences and the SAD's attempt at revival could produce a closely fought four-way political battle in several constituencies.
For the BJP, the immediate challenge is to turn organisational expansion into actual votes. For the Congress, unity could prove just as important as its campaign. AAP will have to defend its record in government, while the SAD faces the larger task of restoring its relevance.
With several months still remaining before polling, alliances, candidate selection, defections and local-level political equations could significantly change the electoral landscape.
The eventual result may therefore depend not only on state-wide issues but also on how effectively each party manages its organisation and voter outreach at the constituency level.
