Singapore’s Act of inhumane came in front of the world when they put Indonesian foreign domestic workers for SALE on an e-commerce website, which describe itself as, “a simple way to sell the clutter in your life.”

The advertisements were made under the username, “MAID.RECRUITMENT”. They were offering the services of helpers from Indonesia. Also, some ads indicated some maids as ‘SOLD’.

This act of putting up foreign domestic workers for sale on e-commerce website was condemned and discouraged by many, around the world.

Wahyu Susilo is an executive director of Migrant case, an Indonesian NGO. He strongly condemned the act and said that the people or companies behind these advertisements should be arrested and the people who were advertised should be given justice.

He said that it was very unjust and demeaning to the Migrant workers. Singapore labor Ministry said that they are aware that ‘Maids’ were being marketed inappropriately. They even got some of the advertisements taken down the platform.  Also, they have launched an investigation.

They further said that advertising foreign domestic workers like commodities is a serious offense to the dignity.

The ministry further assured that the employment agencies found guilty of such practices will have their licenses suspended.

Singapore is a house of 250,000 foreign domestic workers. Workers from Indonesia work in Singapore because they get higher salaries as companies to the pay they get back home.

Indonesian domestic workers have complained of exploitation and mistreatment in Malaysia and some parts of Middle Asia, while it is less common in tightly-regulated Singapore.
