Asian Games Day 6: India wins shooting gold, Manpreet Kaur lifts bronze in shot put; Satwik-Chirag knocked out

Asian Games 2026: India added another gold medal to its Asian Games 2026 tally on Friday, with shooters Suruchi and Kamaljeet claiming the top prize in the 10m air pistol mixed team event. However, the day also brought a major setback in badminton as defending champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were knocked out in the opening round.

The Indian pair, who won gold at the last Asian Games, suffered a 21-12, 19-21, 21-14 defeat to Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Peeratchai Sukphun. Their early exit ended hopes of another men’s doubles gold.

Shooting gives India two medals in quick succession

Suruchi and Kamaljeet gave India its second gold of the Games in the 10m air pistol mixed team final. The Indian pair finished with 484.6 points, finishing 6.6 points ahead of South Korea, which scored 478.0. Iran took bronze with 415.8 points.

The gold was also India’s first in shooting at these Games. 

India also picked up a silver in the 50m rifle three positions team event. The Indian team finished with 1,762 points, behind China’s 1,766. South Korea took bronze with 1,751 points.

Satwik-Chirag knocked out in first round

The biggest disappointment for India came in men’s doubles badminton. Satwik and Chirag, the defending Asian Games champions, could not get past the first round. Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Peerachai Sukphun won the three-game contest 21-12, 19-21, 21-14.

India still had success in other badminton events. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated Tsang Hiu Yan and Lui Lok Lok 21-16, 16-21, 21-16 to enter the women’s doubles second round.

Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila also advanced in mixed doubles after beating Malaysia’s Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shiuon Jamie 22-20, 24-22.

India reaches both kabaddi finals

India secured places in both the men’s and women’s kabaddi finals. The men’s team produced a dominant 66-27 win over Thailand in the semifinal. India will face either Iran or Chinese Taipei in the final and will look to defend its gold medal.

The women’s team also booked a place in the final after beating Nepal 48-24. India will meet either Chinese Taipei or Iran in the title match.

Women’s hockey team through to semifinals

India’s women’s hockey team continued its strong run by defeating Japan 3-1. The win was India’s fourth straight victory in Pool B and took the team to 12 points, enough to secure a place in the semifinals.

Manpreet Kaur wins shot put bronze

India added another athletics medal through Manpreet Kaur, who won bronze in the women’s shot put.

Manpreet produced her best effort of 17.17 metre on her fourth attempt. China’s Song won gold with 19.40 metres, while Zhang took silver with 18.14 metres. India’s Krishna Menon finished fifth after recording a best throw of 16.57 metres.

Anahat Singh reaches squash semifinals

Teenager Anahat Singh moved into the women’s singles squash semifinals after beating compatriot Tanvi Khanna 3-0.

Anahat won the match in just 15 minutes, taking the games 11-2, 11-5, 11-3. She will next face Japan’s Satomi Watanabe, a bronze medallist from the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.

Boxing and weightlifting results

Sachin Siwach advanced to the quarterfinals of the men’s 60kg boxing competition after defeating Jordan’s Mohammad Abu Jajeh 4-1 on a split decision. In contrast, Preeti’s campaign came to an end after she lost 0-5 to North Korea’s Pang Chol Mi.

India’s Nirupama Devi also missed out on a medal in the women’s 61kg weightlifting category. She lifted 93kg in the snatch and 124kg in the clean and jerk for a combined 217kg.

Table tennis adds another bronze

Manush Shah and Diya Chitale secured a bronze medal in mixed doubles after reaching the semifinals.

The Indian pair lost 8-11, 5-11, 8-11, 2-11 to China’s Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha. Since the semifinal stage guarantees a bronze medal, the Indian duo finished the event on the podium despite missing out on a place in the final.

Mixed results in men’s 100m

India’s Gurindervir Singh finished fifth in his 100m heat with a time of 10.32 seconds and failed to qualify for the final. Animesh Kujur also missed out after finishing seventh in his heat in 10.38 seconds.
