Mirabai Chanu ends India's hiatus, wins silver in women’s 49kg weightlifting at Asian Games 2026
PTC News Desk: Mirabai Chanu has added an Asian Games medal to her impressive career, winning silver in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event. Competing in the category for the final time, Chanu lifted a total of 198kg, with 87kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk.
North Korea’s Ri Song Gum won the gold after lifting 215kg in total, including 94kg in the snatch and 121kg in the clean and jerk. She also set new world records in both events.
Chanu, the oldest lifter in the 49kg field, started with an 83kg snatch. She then successfully lifted 85kg and 87kg, finishing third after the snatch round.
She made a strong comeback in the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 111kg. The performance helped her secure the Asian Games silver medal she had been chasing.
Second Asian Games Medal for India in Weightlifting
Before Chanu, India’s last weightlifting medal at the Asian Games came from Karnam Malleswari, who won silver in Bangkok in 1998.
Chanu had narrowly missed out on a medal at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, finishing fourth after an injury prevented her from completing her final clean and jerk attempt.
Mirabai Chanu’s Career Highlights
The 30-year-old weightlifter won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 in the women’s 49kg category.
In April 2021, Chanu also set a world record in the clean and jerk by lifting 119kg at the Asian Weightlifting Championships. She held the record until September 2023.
With her Asian Games silver, Chanu has now added another major achievement to her decorated career.
