Asian Games 2026: Vithya Ramraj breaks PT Usha’s 42-year record with bronze; Gulveer Singh wins silver in 1500m

PTC Web Desk: India continued its medal-winning run at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, with Vithya Ramraj producing one of the biggest moments of the day. She won the bronze medal in the women’s 400m hurdles on Monday after clocking a personal-best time of 54.75 seconds.

Her performance also ended PT Usha’s 42-year-old national record in the event. Usha had set the previous mark of 55.42 seconds at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Vithya Ramraj creates history

Ramraj finished third in the 400m hurdles final. UAE’s Mariam Kareem won gold in 54.31 seconds, while Kazakhstan’s Adelina Zems took silver in 54.58 seconds.

For Vithya Ramraj, the bronze was her second medal at the ongoing Games. She had earlier been part of India’s silver-winning mixed 4x400m relay team. Her 54.75-second run was enough to take the national record away from one of India’s most celebrated athletes.

India’s athletics campaign continues

Athletics has been an important source of medals for India at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Indian athletes have already secured several podium finishes in events including the long jump, high jump, distance races and relay events.

The athletics programme also featured Murali Sreeshankar in the men's long jump, Gulveer Singh in the men's 1500m and Parul Chaudhary in the women's 5000m on September 28.

India's medal tally has continued to rise during Day 10, with Vithya Ramraj's bronze taking the country's total past the 40-medal mark.

India continued to add to its medal tally at the Asian Games, with strong performances in both shooting and athletics.

Indian shooters have now won 12 medals, including one gold, seven silver and four bronze medals. At the last Asian Games, Indian shooters had won 22 medals, including seven golds.

Murali Sreeshankar wins silver in long jump

India's Murali Sreeshankar  won the silver medal in the men's long jump. Despite dealing with an injury, Murali produced an impressive second attempt of 8.07 metre to finish second.

China's Xu Yuhao took the gold after jumping 8.17 metre. Uzbekistan's Anvar Anvarov also recorded 8.07 metre but finished with the bronze.

Parul Chaudhary takes bronze in 5000m

India's Parul Chaudhary secured the bronze medal in the women's 5000m event. She finished the race in 15:14.61 to take third place. Chaudhary made a strong push in the final stages and moved ahead of Kazakhstan's Nora Tanui to secure her place on the podium.

Winfred Mutile Yavi won the gold medal in the event.

Gulveer Singh wins silver in 1500m

Indian runner Gulveer Singh added another medal to the country's athletics haul by winning silver in the men's 1500m race. Singh finished the race in 3:36.72, securing second place in a closely contested event.

His silver further strengthened India's medal tally in athletics as the competition entered its later stages.
