Assam Floods: Improving situation, but thousands still affected in 15 districts

Barpeta (Assam), June 26: The flood situation in Assam is showing signs of improvement, although approximately 2.72 lakh people across 15 districts continue to be affected. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 874 villages in 37 revenue circles, including Bajali, Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Tamulpur, remain submerged. Barpeta district alone has witnessed 1.70 lakh people affected, with Bajali, Lakhimpur, and Nalbari districts also experiencing significant impact.

The floodwaters have engulfed approximately 5,936.63 hectares of agricultural land in the affected districts. To provide relief and support, the administration has established 61 relief camps and 104 distribution centers, accommodating 43,064 individuals.

In the last 24 hours, the floods have caused the loss of 222 animals in Nalbari district, damaged 1,290 houses in Nalbari and Tamulpur districts, breached three embankments, damaged seven embankments, 50 roads, three bridges, and numerous infrastructure facilities such as Anganwadi centers, agricultural bunds, culverts, and irrigation canals.

While the overall flood situation in the state is improving, the condition in Barpeta district remains critical, with around 1.70 lakh people affected in 167 villages. Within Barpeta district, Sarthebari revenue circle has witnessed 1.20 lakh people affected, followed by 44,394 in the Barpeta revenue circle, 3,255 in the Chenga revenue circle, and 1,743 in the Baghbar revenue circle. Additionally, 382.75 hectares of cropland in Barpeta district remain submerged.

The district administration has established 59 relief camps and 53 distribution centers to assist the affected population. Furthermore, approximately 1.05 lakh domestic animals in the district have also been impacted.

The district administration has been actively providing relief assistance, including the distribution of essential supplies such as rice, dal, salt, mustard oil, and cattle feed. A total of 1,477.77 quintals of rice, 248.27 quintals of dal, 74.09 quintals of salt, 7,478.88 liters of mustard oil, and 1,646.20 quintals of cattle feed have been distributed among the flood-affected individuals.

Rescue operations are being carried out by personnel from NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), and Fire and Emergency Services to ensure the safety of affected residents.
