Bangladesh bomb blast: Explosion rocks anti-Sheikh Hasina rally near Dhaka, three injured
The rally was led by students who played a key role in the movement against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
PTC News Desk: At least three people were injured after a bomb exploded at a rally organised by Bangladesh's student-led National Citizen Party (NCP) in Savar, near Dhaka, on Monday night.
The blast took place around 9:45 pm while the rally was in progress. The event marked the start of the party's nationwide July March campaign, which aims to push for political and economic reforms across Bangladesh.
In a statement, the NCP claimed that the explosion was a deliberate attack on its rally. The party said the bomb went off at the Eidgah field in Savar while supporters had gathered for a post-march meeting.
The July March is part of a month-long campaign by the newly formed political party to build public support across the country.
The rally was led by students who played a key role in the movement against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The campaign also coincides with the second anniversary of the student protests that eventually led to her removal from power. Hasina left Bangladesh for India on August 5, 2024, following the political unrest known as the "July Revolution."
Meanwhile, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in April that it is reviewing Bangladesh's request for Hasina's extradition through legal and judicial channels. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the request is being examined as India works to maintain stable relations with Bangladesh's new government.
According to the NCP, the July March campaign seeks action on key issues such as holding a referendum, creating jobs, addressing the power shortage, controlling rising prices of essential goods, and strengthening border security.
