KP Sharma Oli: Former Nepal PM arrested over Gen Z protests day after Balen Shah takes oath
The development comes just a day after rapper-turned-politician Balen Shah took oath as the country’s new Prime Minister.
PTC News Desk: Former Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was arrested on Saturday in connection with the Gen Z protests that resulted in his ouster from the power.
The development comes just a day after rapper-turned-politician Balen Shah took oath as the country’s new Prime Minister. Nepali Congress leader and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak was also arrested in connection with the same case.
The arrests come months after Nepal was rocked by a massive youth-led uprising, what was described as Gen Z protests in September 2025, fuelled by anger, corruption, governance failure.
The protests began as a movement for digital freedom later transformed into widespread agitation with a sweeping state crackdown and claimed 76 lives and left more than 2,000 people injured.
KP Sharmi Oli's arrest came following a high-level commission in Nepal to investigativiolence during the anti-corruption protests recommended prosecution of the four-time prime minister and leader of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist).
“As the executive head, Oli should be held responsible for anything, good or bad,” the report said.
The arrested ministers if prosecuted as recommended by the panel and found guilty by the court could face up to 10 years of prison.
