The grim saga began with the discovery of the first victim, a 28-year-old man from Nigeria, shot dead on Sunday afternoon in Joliet Township. As law enforcement officials conducted an overnight stakeout, the situation escalated when officers observed blood outside a neighboring home. Upon entering, they found two individuals shot dead. The investigation then led to Nance's residence, where an additional five bodies were discovered. This brought the total death toll at the three crime scenes to eight.

Joliet Police Chief Al Roechner expressed the severity of the situation during a news conference, stating, "I’ve been a policeman for 29 years, and this is probably the worst crime scene I’ve ever been associated with."
