Delhi-NCR to witness heavy rainfall, IMD issues orange alert

PTC News Desk: Heavy rainfall lashed Delhi-NCR on Monday morning, inundating roads and prompting weather department to issue orange alert for Gurugram and Faridabad. Other parts of the region were placed under a yellow alert.

The fresh alerts follow Ghaziabad being placed under a red alert and Noida under an orange alert on August 31, while lighter rainfall warnings have been issued for Gurugram and Faridabad starting Tuesday.

The Yamuna River remained above the danger mark of 205.33 meters on Monday, with visuals showing it heavily swollen. The river had breached the danger level a few days earlier, and forecasts indicate further rise.

August brought unusually cool weather to Delhi-NCR, driven by frequent showers. The month logged 400.1 mm of rainfall—72% higher than the long-term average of 233.1 mm—likely making it the coolest August in 13 years.

The IMD expects a similarly wet September, which normally records 123.5 mm of rain but saw 200 mm last year. With the excessive downpours, Delhi’s annual rainfall is projected to cross 1,000 mm this year.
