Leirang Festival brings Northeast India’s culture to life in Chandigarh
PTC Web Desk: The heart of Chandigarh pulsed with the rhythm and colour of Northeast India as the “Leirang – Flavour of the Northeast” festival lit up Bal Bhavan, Sector 23. Organised by the ARKAY Foundation, a dedicated organisation for the upliftment of the LGBT community, the event aimed to foster cultural understanding and unity by showcasing the vibrant traditions of the Northeastern states.
The festival was a vivid celebration of the region’s diverse heritage, featuring a lively blend of traditional dance, music, food, fashion, and art. ARKAY Foundation emphasized that such events are crucial in breaking stereotypes and enhancing cultural awareness about Northeast India, which often remains underrepresented in mainstream narratives.
The event kicked off with an enchanting series of classical and folk dances performed by Guru Dr Manju and his troupe from Manipur. The energy continued to soar with musical performances by acclaimed Northeast artists including RJAY, Felix & Len, Sorri Senjam, and the electrifying Kok Band.
A major highlight of the evening was a vibrant fashion show curated by celebrated designer Arbind Tonjam, featuring models adorned in traditional attire. The grand finale was marked by a breathtaking appearance from Manipur film superstar Soma Laishram, who turned heads in an elegant Potloi, the traditional Manipuri bridal dress, earning thunderous applause from the audience.
“Leirang” not only celebrated cultural pride but also acted as a bridge connecting communities, proving once again that India’s strength lies in its diversity.
