Rajpal Yadav sentenced to three months in jail as Delhi High Court upholds cheque bounce conviction
PTC Web Desk: Actor Rajpal Yadav has been sentenced to three months in jail after the Delhi High Court upheld his conviction in multiple cheque bounce cases. The court found him guilty in seven complaints related to dishonoured cheques and also directed him to pay more than Rs 1 crore in each case to the complainant. However, the amount of around Rs 2 crore already deposited by the actor will be adjusted against the total payment.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma also gave Yadav two months to approach a higher court if he wishes to challenge the decision. The detailed judgment is yet to be released.
The Delhi High Court was hearing revision petitions filed by Rajpal Yadav and his wife against a 2019 sessions court order, which had upheld their conviction by a magistrate's court in April 2018.
At that time, the magistrate's court had sentenced the actor to six months in jail in the cheque bounce cases.
In June 2024, the High Court had temporarily suspended Yadav's conviction after he assured the court that he would make sincere efforts to settle the dispute with the complainant.
His lawyer had argued that the money involved was borrowed to finance the production of a film. The movie failed at the box office, causing heavy financial losses, which made it difficult for Yadav to repay the amount.
However, the court later observed that Yadav had repeatedly failed to fulfil the commitments he had made regarding repayment. As a result, he was directed to surrender before the court in February this year.
Later that month, the High Court suspended his sentence temporarily after he deposited Rs 1.5 crore into the complainant's bank account. Following the latest order, the court has now confirmed his conviction and awarded him a three-month jail term.
