Former Chief Justice of India RC Lahoti dies at 81; PM Modi offers condolences

New Delhi, March 24: Former Chief Justice of India Ramesh Chandra Lahoti passed away at the age of 81 in a Delhi hospital on Wednesday. After the news surfaced, condolences started pouring from various dignitaries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences on the demise of CJI Lahoti and tweeted, "Anguished by the passing away of former CJI Shri RC Lahoti Ji. He will be remembered for his contributions to the judiciary and emphasis on ensuring speedy justice to the underprivileged. Condolences to his family and well-wishers. Om Shanti." Narendra Modi on Atmanirbhar Bharat Defence Industry Outreach Webinar "Former Chief Justice of India Justice RC Lahoti is no more. He was one of the finest Chiefs I had ever known. May his soul rest in peace," said Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai, vice president of Supreme Court Bar Association. Expressing condolences, Central Railway took to Twitter and said "Saddened to hear the passing away of RC Lahoti Ex. Chief Justice of India. In this hour of grief, we stand with the family of Justice Lahoti to bear the loss and sends heartfelt condolences." He retired on November 1, 2005. Ramesh Chandra Lahoti was born on November 1, 1940, and joined the Bar in District Guna in 1960. He enrolled as an Advocate in 1962. In April 1977, he was appointed as a District & Sessions Judge after being recruited directly from the Bar to the State Higher Judicial Service. After a year as a District and Sessions Judge, he resigned in May 1978 and reverted to the Bar for practising in the High Court. Former CJI RC Lahoti passes away (3) On May 3, 1988, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and on August 4, 1989, he was made a permanent Judge. On February 7, 1994, he was transferred to the Delhi High Court and on December 9, 1998, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of India.
