India logs 67,597 new Covid-19 cases, positivity rate at 5.02%

Coronavirus Update: India reported 67,597 fresh Covid-19 cases and as many as 1,188 deaths in the last 24 hours, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday. With this, the country's total case tally reached 4,23,39,611, with the death toll mounting to 5,02,874. The active caseload in India further declined to 9,94,891, comprising 2.35 percent of the total coronavirus infections. The daily positivity rate in the country was recorded at 5.02%, while the weekly positivity rate was at 8.30 percent, the health ministry updated. A total of 1,80,456 patients have been recovered in the last 24 hours and the total tally of recovered patients has reached 4,08,40,658, so far. The Covid recovery rate in India has improved to 96.46 percent. India has so far done 74,29,08,121 tests. According to provisional reports, India's Covid-19 vaccination coverage has surpassed 170.21 crore (1,70,21,72,615) in the previous 24 hours, with 55,78,297 vaccine doses administered.

Several states and union territories reopened schools for offline classes on Monday due to a drop in Covid-19 cases. Schools have reopened in Delhi, Kerala, Odisha, and Gujarat, among other places, with students and staff adhering to coronavirus protocols issued by the Government of India, like wearing masks and social distancing. At the same time, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that an Aadhaar card is not mandatory for Covid-19 vaccine registration on the CoWIN portal. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare notified a bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant that one of nine identity documents, including passports, driving licences, PAN cards, voter's cards, and ration cards, can be provided for vaccination.
