Chandigarh, March 4: In a decisive victory, BJP's Kuljit Singh Sandhu emerged triumphant in the re-elections for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The BJP secured a total of 19 votes, while the combined efforts of the Congress and the AAP yielded 16 votes. Notably, one vote was declared invalid. On the other hand, Rajinder Sharma of the BJP has been appointed as the Deputy Mayor with a resounding mandate.

He secured a total of 19 votes, surpassing the combined tally of Congress candidate Nirmala Devi, who garnered 17 votes in the municipal elections.

The re-elections were ordered by the Supreme Court on February 20, overturning the results of the January 30 mayoral poll in which the BJP candidate had initially claimed an unexpected win. This development marked a significant turn of events in Chandigarh's political landscape.

Candidates from the Congress party, Gurpreet Singh Gabi and Nirmala Devi, contended for the positions of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively. However, it was Kuljit Singh Sandhu who ultimately secured the Senior Deputy Mayor position, reflecting the continued political dominance of the BJP in the region.

The results underscore the intense political dynamics at play in Chandigarh, with the BJP consolidating its position despite the collaborative efforts of Congress and AAP. The one invalidated vote adds an intriguing element to the narrative, further highlighting the significance of the re-election process.
