BSF constable's release matter raised during India-Pakistan DGMOs talks
PTC News Desk: Although a ceasefire has been announced between India and Pakistan, the situation remains uncertain for BSF constable Purnam Kumar, who was captured by the Pakistan Rangers after inadvertently crossing the border on April 23.
BSF officials have indicated that, following India’s Operation Sindoor, direct contact with Pakistan Rangers is currently not taking place. However, the matter of Kumar’s release was reportedly raised during the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO)-level discussions held between the two nations today.
“Person-to-person contact is currently not possible as of now. But the issue is to be taken up during DGMO-level talks between the two countries,” a senior BSF official said.
Last month, Kumar’s family, including his wife, met with BSF officials in Punjab and were assured that discussions were underway with the Pakistan Rangers concerning his release.
Although no concrete assurance was received from the Pakistan side during those talks, the BSF remains "optimistic" about securing his return, even amid the drastically altered circumstances following Operation Sindoor.
Kumar was detained by Pakistan Rangers on April 23, just a day after the terror attack in Pahalgam. Prior to the launch of Operation Sindoor — India’s military response to the Pahalgam incident — regular commander-level negotiations were being held between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers.
