Can't do this: BLO dies by suicide in Uttar Pradesh over work pressure related to SIR
PTC News Desk: In a tragic incident, a 46-year-old booth level officer died by suicide at his home in Uttar Pradesh's Moradabad. A suicide note was also recovered in which he cited work pressure related to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The victim has been identified as Sarvesh Singh, who was an assistant teacher posted at a school and had been assigned BLO duty on October 7. It was his first-ever poll-related assignment.
A two-page suicide note address to district Basic Education Officer was recovered from the spot. In the note, Singh expressed his anguish over being unable to accomplish his targets within required deadline.
“I have been working day and night but am unable to meet the SIR targets. My nights have become unbearable due to anxiety. I barely sleep for two to three hours. I have four daughters, two of whom are unwell. Please forgive me,” the note read.
Notably, a BLO serves as a primary point of contact for the public to help fill election-related forms and upload information on designated databases.
This marks the latest incident of suicide, where several BLOs have taken thei own lives citing massive work overload and pressure from senior officials, triggering a political showdown as voter roll revision is underway in 12 states.
A video of Singh, purportdly before the suicide has come to light in which he said that was unable to complete his job despite working hard.
According to officials, early Sunday morning, his wife Babli Devi found him hanging in the storage room of their home and immediately alerted the local police.
