CBI takes over investigation in Manipur sexual assault case
New Delhi, July 29: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe in a case of alleged sexual assault on two women by a mob in Manipur in May, officials informed on Saturday.
The incident, which occurred in May, gained national attention after a video showing the victims being paraded naked was widely circulated online, sparking outrage throughout the country.
The CBI has taken over the FIR registered by the Manipur police against unidentified people in accordance with its procedure. Notably, the case has been handed over to the CBI on a reference from the Union Home Ministry.
According to information, the two women were subjected to sexual assault before being released by a mob. The distressing 26-second video of the incident emerged on July 19. One of the women featured in the footage is the wife of a retired Army Subedar who had served in the Assam Regiment and fought in the Kargil War.
The incident came to light around a month ago, as a complaint was lodged on June 21 at the Saikul police station in Kangpokpi district.
Manipur has been facing ethnic violence since May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was held in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
