PTC Web Desk:  In a major infrastructure push for the Tricity region, the Centre has sanctioned Rs 1,463.95 crore for the construction of a six-lane, access-controlled greenfield spur in Punjab. The project aims to ease mounting traffic congestion in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula while strengthening regional connectivity.

The proposed corridor will connect the Ambala–Chandigarh stretch of NH-205A with the Zirakpur Bypass. Once completed, it will serve as a crucial segment of the larger Tricity Ring Road plan, which has been envisioned to streamline vehicular movement around the fast-growing urban cluster.

Officials said the new spur has been strategically planned to divert heavy and long-distance traffic away from densely populated city roads. At present, major arterial routes including NH-44, NH-205A and NH-152 frequently witness severe bottlenecks due to increasing vehicle density and high inter-state traffic flow. The upcoming corridor is expected to significantly reduce pressure on these highways by providing an alternative high-speed route.

Beyond easing congestion within the Tricity, the project is also likely to improve connectivity towards neighbouring Himachal Pradesh. Travellers heading to the Shimla region are expected to benefit from smoother and faster movement, particularly during peak tourist seasons.
